The future of most of the areas covered by this conference appears to lie in manipulating people's central metabolic control systems to enhance intelligence (by ~20 IQ points), extend life (by a projected 20-30 years), and eliminate most chronic illnesses. I developed good methods to do this in 2001, which have since been applied to myself and ~100 other people. I soon expect AI research, computer development, aging research, and other complex areas to be dominated by people who have been enhanced in this way.
Unfortunately, only ~20% of the population are candidates for this, though the rate is higher for engineers and scientists. Though not painful, this procedure is uncomfortable and requires months of recovery/adaptation once completed. So far, this procedure has only been applied as needed to address serious chronic illnesses, as it makes many small permanent changes in people. No one has yet done it just for the intelligence it brings or the promise of a longer and healthier life.
It would appear that this may be the original singularity, as some people develop a super-human level of intelligence. You may have the choice of doing this procedure, or stepping aside and letting others who have been so enhanced succeed where you can barely compete.

If it pleases the organizers of Convergence08, consider the following question. Is there a way the participants in the 2008 Conference might focus attention upon the scientific evidence of ominously looming global challenges that could soon be presented to the family of humanity by the explosive increase of overconsumption, overproduction and overpopulation activities of the human species now overspreading the surface of Earth?

Thanks for your kind and helpful responses. Can you think of anything I can do to facilitate the discussion concerning Global Catastrophic Risks other than attending the meeting on 10/14/08? At the moment I have no plans to travel to California; however, if circumstances favor my presence, then I will try to join all of you in Mountain View, CA next month. Also, please let me know of things I might do to help with the Convergence08 Conference from the East Coast of the USA.

This, I'm afraid, is going to be a kind of "Dutch Uncle" or "tough love" post.
I've been informed that the mailing list is not in use. I've been directed to this wiki as the "watering hole" for even prep and volunteer support. Very well.
I don't find this format at all conducive to anything resembling conversation. I'm interested in helping out on site during the event, but all I find is a time-log sheet.
Assuming for the moment that I would be willing to help with running video recording -- something I have a track record with at MGTaylorevents among others -- what are the issues? What's the scope? What is the equipment? How many cameras? How do I acquaint myself with the gear before the event? Is video logistics just a matter of making sure blank media are on hand and that used media get labeled?
I know this is a volunteer effort. but please help me out here. Or don't and I'll just attend, and what the heck, I'll have whatever kind of experience I have.

Note that not only can you add to these Wiki pages, but you can also create new pages and links to them. Clearly we need some structure to support volunteer efforts, as this has NOT been forthcoming from the conference organizers. Just create the obviously missing structure as though you were organizing things (which is exactly what you will be doing) and make your entries therein.
As for me, I would gladly pay some money to have my own presentation(s) recorded to MPEG files and posted on the web. I suspect that a small "donation", perhaps $20/session, would entice a "volunteer" to record sessions and post them on the web. When you create your Wiki list of people wanting their presentations recorded and posted, please put me at the top of that list.

I don't have any equipment. From the fact of the page I linked to above, I got the impression there was some sort of system intended to be in place and some wort of hardware already available.
I'm not in a position to do the entire production with my own or rented equipment. If I understand you correctly, that's the expectation present. Thanks for clearing that up for me.
Consequently, I won't be following up on your suggestion to create a wiki page. I'm just one guy who knows how to run gear.
